Optimization of Signal-to-Noise Ratio in Direct XRF Analysis for Chromium Contamination Monitoring

Direct X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis of aqueous solutions faces significant challenges due to high background scattering from water, which severely degrades the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). This study presents a method to optimize SNR in direct XRF analysis of chromium (Cr) contamination in leachate and fly ash samples by employing primary beam filters. The approach minimizes interference from scattered photons while maintaining sufficient excitation intensity for sensitive detection. Two filter materials—copper (Cu) and germanium (Ge)—were evaluated with varying thicknesses using Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP) simulations and experimental validation. Results show that a Cu filter with thickness between 100 µm and 140 µm provides optimal balance between SNR enhancement and acceptable measurement time. At this range, the SNR reaches saturation, indicating diminishing returns beyond these values. Experimental data confirm that increasing filter thickness improves peak visibility and reduces background noise around the Cr Kα line at 5.41 keV. The filtered spectrum acts as an effective monochromatic source, selectively exciting Cr while suppressing interfering radiation.PSCA Antibody Protocol With this optimized setup, the limit of quantitation (LOQ) for Cr in liquid samples was achieved at 0.14-3-3 gamma Antibody Biological Activity 32 mg/L, well below Sweden’s landfill standard of 2.PMID:35259587 5 mg/L. The method enables rapid, on-site monitoring without complex sample preparation, making it suitable for real-time environmental surveillance. Furthermore, MCNP simulations revealed matrix effects in Fe–Cr systems, where iron enhances Cr fluorescence due to secondary excitation, leading to overestimation of Cr content by up to 33% at low concentrations. These findings highlight the need for correction algorithms in practical applications. Overall, the integration of tailored filtering and simulation-based optimization significantly enhances the sensitivity and reliability of direct XRF for trace Cr detection in environmental matrices.MedChemExpress (MCE) offers a wide range of high-quality research chemicals and biochemicals (novel life-science reagents, reference compounds and natural compounds) for scientific use.
